The future of journalism today : Netherlands' flagship news outlet is hiring new Python developers
Nieuwsuur is reknown for large scale research projects, resulting in feature stories like this recent one on the destruction of the Nordstream gas pipelines.
The way a newsroom is configured has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. No matter what type of publication, much of the workflow has been changing constantly since the coming of the Internet. In major newspapers, for example, journalism for the last five years has been transitioning to online first. This format, after all, was new to everyone, and went 24/7 only after the introduction of the iPhone in 2007..
Has the time now come that it's not the form, but the function of journalism, that is leading innovation? It’s underway now, tells the listing of three new job openings by the Netherlands’ most prominent news outlet, daily tv show Nieuwsuur (by public news service NOS).
This is really good news: the job openings look voor innovation along tech lines, however are all about journalistic research. For this daily 22 o'clock nationwide news hour, the newsroom is looking for an OSINT specialist and a data journalist with programming skills. Plus an individual to beautifully design their feature stories, in infographics and video.
There are likely IT professionals or designers who have no experience in the news media but have the required skills, leaving them with the question whether it is then worth applying to such a renowned program. My tip: just do it. If there's anywhere you learn good journalism on the fly, it is at Nieuwsuur, you may just not yet have met, because they have no programming skills.
